PayPal to halt some remittances services in Japan

PayPal is halting personal payment services for users in Japan from Wednesday due to new regulations that go into force the following day.

"We wish to inform you that effective 31 March 2010, you will not be able to send funds using the 'Send Money' function for noncommercial transactions only, until further notice," the company wrote in an e-mail to users in Japan. "The changes to our personal payment services are necessary in order for us to comply with new regulatory requirements in Japan."

Remittances from UAE beats global financial crisis, grow 15% in 2009

Remittances sent home by expatriates from the UAE recorded around 15 per cent growth in 2009 despite the global financial crisis, Al Ansari Exchange Chairman Mohamed Al Ansari said.

"Remittances are estimated at $15 billion in 2009, but the correct figure could be approximately $20 billion after gathering the complete data," Al Ansari told Khaleej Times on Monday on the sidelines of a seminar titled "Money Transfers Middle East & North Africa."

UAE expatriate remittances fell 10 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2009, Al Ittihad said, citing officials from four companies that conduct money transfers.

According to the Bloomberg newswire, the Abu Dhabi-based newspaper cited Zara’at Hussein, Director-General of the National Exchange Co, and Ahmed Al Ansari, Director-General of Redha Al Ansari Exchange as saying that remittances fell as people lost jobs, particularly in real estate and construction.

People buy movie tickets, book flights, pay mobile bills and insurance premiums using their mobile phones. The next logical step would be buying fast food, music, groceries, etc. through the same mechanism.

M-commerce in India is mostly limited to payment of utility bills and purchase of a few items including air tickets. However, the potential seems huge, especially when you look at the high penetration rate of mobile phones among the urban and the rural population as well as the fact that India has 500 million plus mobile subscribers, roughly twice the number of people with an active bank account.

Globe launches domestic cash pick-up

Globe Telecom Inc.’s mobile commerce subsidiary G-Xchange, Inc. (GXI) Thursday launched its GCASH REMIT domestic cash pick-up service which charges P10 per money transfer transaction in 18,000 sending and receiving points nationwide.

GCASH Remit provides the cheapest and the largest network for money transfers within the Philippines, with double the number of outlets provided by other local remittance firms. Its sending and receiving points are accessible even to those living in far-flung areas. In addition, senders and beneficiaries of remittances over P1,000 also receive free airtime load as long as they are Globe, Tattoo or Touch Mobile subscribers.
